Vilamoura itself offers all the facilities and amenities of a modern holiday destination. Its reputation as a renowned golfing destination is recognized the world over, yet aside from this it has so much more to offer. Vilamoura is built around Portugal's largest leisure marina, an award-winning home to over 1,000 impressive private yachts and power boats, and lined with shops, restaurants and cafes.
Close to the marina are carefully preserved Roman ruins that were unearthed during construction work in the 1960s. For the sports enthusiast, besides the golf, there is a lawn bowling club, tennis centre, riding school, and even clay pigeon shooting. There is also an impressive string of sandy beaches with all the water sports you could wish for and big game fishing is very popular. There are restaurants to cater for every taste, and at night the resort comes alive with bars, discos and clubs offering live entertainment across the spectrum.
Vilamoura's international casino is the haunt of celebrities, offering nightly dinner shows in addition to gambling tables, slot machines and bingo rooms. EASTERN ALGARVE
TAVIRA
Tavira, to the east of Faro in the south-east corner of Portugal, is one of the most photogenic towns along the Algarve coast, sporting white-washed houses topped with decorative chimneys and pyramid shaped Roman-tiled roofs, set among orange, fig and almond trees. The charming town, on the Gilao River, dates back to around 2,000 BC, and also boasts a Moorish Castle, with some splendid views from the ramparts. Then too there are some attractive churches (37 of them to be exact), including the Church of the Misericordia with a beautiful Renaissance door and carved high altar. Not many of the buildings pre-date the devastating earthquake of 1755, which destroyed much of the Algarve, but the town was painstakingly rebuilt with many fine 18th-century buildings. Tavira flanks both banks of the river, which are linked by a Roman bridge. Along the coast and on an island opposite the town (reached by ferry) are some beautiful isolated sandy beaches.
WESTERN ALGARVE
- LAGOS
A wonderful blend of old and new. The 17th Century Fort with its crumbling walls guards the harbour entrance and a magnificent new marina with some excellent fish restaurants provides a modern touch. There are still the pretty little squares, covered in brightly coloured flowers which lend the town much of its charm, but there is something for everyone in Lagos.
More resort information will follow so keep a look out.
